“The Bat” by Johann Strauss
“The Bat” is one of the most brilliant among operettas in the whole history of genre. It is still staged to this very day in theatres enriching the repertoire of both opera and operetta companies. It is hard to believe today that opening of “The Bat” that took place on 5th of April 1874 in Vienna got a cool welcome and was presented to the audience just 17 times. Only after one hundred performance in Berlin Vienna reverted to this play again. It is hard to find one more operetta which was conducted by such prominent conductors as Gustav Mahler, Bruno Walter, Felix Weingartner, Hans Knappertsbusch, Herbert von Karajan.
The story took place in Vienna. Intrigue decided by one of the heroes is nothing but a practical joke: everybody are cheating each other, flirting, going the whole hog, imprisoning guiltless… And such a mess is happening in the vortex of waltzes and polkas of great Strauss, bringing delight to audience for already 130 years.
“The Bat” will be staged in our theatre already for the sixth time. Original libretto was created by well-known French play writers Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy on the base of funny comedy “Le Reveillon”. Budapest Operetta Theatre and authors of libretto Istvan Kallai and Gyorgy Bohm have created their own version. Performance will be staged by Hungarian director Miklos Gabor Kerenyi, he is already known well by St. Petersburg audience by his productions of “Bayader” and “Countess Maritza”. By this production theatre will continue collaboration with Hungarian masters of genre.
Opening night is planned on 30th of October 2010.
